Road Construction Ramps Up as U.S. Traffic Rebounds

Construction crews nationwide are returning to work as businesses begin reopening this summer. Travel, which was significantly reduced due to COVID-19 restrictions, is rebounding to normal rates. Throughout the month of March, states across the U.S. began shutting down– closing offices, restaurants, hair salons, gyms and more. Due to the shutdowns, Raleigh-Durham International Airport, for example, experienced a 96% reduction in flights with only 8,168 passengers flying in one week in May. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation reported that traffic had dropped by 50% on average throughout the month of April.

Along with travel, construction crews on roads and runways have decreased their workloads as their employees are not working and the need for repairs has decreased. In March, when many governments deemed going to work unsafe, workers stayed at home to protect themselves and their families from COVID-19.

Now, businesses nationwide are reopening, and people are returning to work and traveling once more. Construction crews are back out maintaining, repairing, and building new roads and runways. According to the Washington Post, “U.S. traffic has rebounded to about 90 percent of pre-pandemic levels.” Experts predict that a record number of drivers will be on the road this year in the next two months as many people are taking time off work to vacation when they feel it is safe again.

Chemtek works closely with the road construction industry, providing solutions such as PavePro, which help paving crews work safely and efficiently. In a normal year, the summer is the busiest time for paving crews. However, crews are having to adapt quickly and go from 0 to 100 to capitalize on this valuable time of peak paving season, which was off to a slow start due to COVID.  As road construction rapidly ramps up, we are here to provide support to all of our customers, from small paving crews to statewide DOTs.

7 Tips For Productivity While Working From Home!

7 Tips For Productivity While Working From Home!

For many people, working from home for an extended period of time is a new experience. This major adjustment may bring different challenges such as difficulty focusing and determining how to best adjust to a new work setting. Here are some tips for ways to stay productive and get the most out of your workday:

  1. Have a separate space for work from your personal space– While everyone’s home arrangements are different, it is vital to productivity to have a separate workspace. Some people are lucky to have their own office or study room. Even if it’s a desk in your room or a table in another area of the house, find that private space that you can be focused and have uninterrupted time, away from your family or other distractions.
  2. Set regular hours and stick to that schedule- Following as similar a schedule you can to the schedule you had prepandemic will provide a sense of continuity and help you find your groove.
  3. Keep your work area tidy and not cluttered to help stay focused- Studies show working in an organized environment raises productivity and that a messy desk “undermines people’s persistence in completing tasks.”
  4. Stay in communication with your team/other workers- Communicating with your team and making sure everyone is on the same page just as you would in the office is essential for operations to continue to run smoothly. Furthermore, going from the typical office day with team meetings, to working from home can get a little lonely, especially when you are boosts productivity and hold team members accountable for their share of the workload.
  5. Set boundaries for those around you- Communicate to those you live with when you’re working so they do not add unnecessary distractions. Even something as simple as implementing a knock on the door rule or “call me if you really need me,” can make a huge difference.
  6. When you’re done, log off for the day and make sure you maintain a work life balance- It is too easy to keep working after you’re supposed to be done for the day when working from home. However, to stay sane and ensure you don’t get burned out quickly, know when to stop. While there are some days you may need to work later than usual, don’t let this become a regular thing.
  7. Maintain healthy habits – Now is the perfect time to set and maintain healthy lifestyle habits. Despite gyms, pools, and other public workout settings being closed, it is important to still get some exercise to destress during these trying times. Take a walk or bike ride around the neighborhood, or even find a free online class you can stream and do from home. Eating balanced, nutritious meals increases productivity and makes you feel good doing it. Lastly, ensure you’re getting a full eight hours of sleep a night to reset and optimize efficiency the next workday.

While working from home definitely requires an adjustment phase, following these tips will help you boost and maintain productivity!

Celebrate Earth Day While Social Distancing

Celebrate Earth Day While Social Distancing

This year we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, which started on April 22, 1970. Earth Day was founded by Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, in response to the Santa Barbara Oil Spill in 1969. Seeing firsthand the immense amount of water pollution and destruction caused to the area, he wanted to push environmental protection on the national agenda and make it a priority. Nelson assembled a nationwide team making sure to recruit members from both the Democrat and Republican parties to create a united front. The first Earth Day saw 20 million Americans participate, ultimately leading to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and passing of the Clean WaterClean Air, and Endangered Species Acts. Earth Day went global in 1990 with over 200 million people participating. With growing fervor every year, Earth Day has become one of the most celebrated secular observances worldwide, with a billion people contributing in some way every year.

With COVID-19 preventing people from participating in typical Earth Day group activities, such as trash clean-ups, we have compiled a list of small ways you can still contribute and participate in Earth Day while adhering to social distancing and staying safe:

  • Start a Compost Bin– Instead of throwing away kitchen scraps, glass clippings, and other common materials disposed of, use them to compost! Composting is good for your soil AND the Earth!
  • Don’t use Plastic Straws– One of the most common ecofriendly initiatives, using reusable straws or no straw at all is a great way to cut back on unnecessary plastic.
  • Don’t use any disposable plates, utensils, etc.– Another way to cut down on the amount of trash being contributed to landfills, which in turn increases the amount of greenhouse gases in the air. Instead use reusable materials (metal, ceramic, wood, etc.) or even biodegradable options.
  • Have a “No TV day”– Cut down on power and electricity by spending a day TV-free! This is also a great way to connect with others and not get bogged down in technology. Play cards, go for a walk, the possibilities are endless!
  • Plant a Garden– Starting your own little garden is a wonderful way to promote environmentally friendly practices and make a difference in multiple ways. Cut down on the use of pesticides and biocides by supporting organic farming. This also helps cut down on global warming and preserve wildlife.

Celebrate Earth Day While Social DistancingChemtek places environmental sustainability and social responsibility at the forefront of all our operations. While Earth Day is a great way to bring awareness to sustainable practices, these are all things we could be doing to make the world more ecofriendly consistently, not just for one day.

Experience the Next Level of Environmental Responsibility with PavePro!

Experience the Next Level of Environmental Responsibility with PavePro!

Chemtek solutions are the cleanest and greenest in the business.  While PavePro boasts the strongest cleaning power and can outperform competitors, its unique differentiator is its ecologically sound, clean ingredients.

Using PavePro in your paving operations adds value to your business beyond its extraordinary cleaning power by allowing your business to:

  • Strengthen brand positioning by promoting your commitment to using environmentally friendly products
  • Provide a safe work environment for your crew
  • Raise the standard for sustainable practices in construction by incorporating eco-friendly solutions into your operations

High Flashpoint for Superior Safety & RCRA Compliance

PavePro’s flashpoint is significantly higher than other competitors. PavePro’s closed-cup flashpointis greater than 200° F which provides your paving crew a higher level of safety. Citrus products’ flashpoint is typically around 115° F, while diesel’s is 130° F. Learn more about flashpoint in asphalt cleaners. PavePro’s high flashpoint also means it is NOT considered a RCRA hazardous waste unlike its competitors. The Resource and Conservation Recovery Act of 1976 (RCRA) is a federal law requiring that hazardous waste be tracked from generation to disposal. RCRA considers both diesel and citrus cleaners hazardous wastes and therefore noncompliant.

EPA Standards & Environmental Safety

PavePro Green adheres to EPA standards for environmental safety. The use of diesel fuel for asphalt removal or as a release agent is no longer Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) compliant. DOTs forbid contractors from using diesel fuel on state and federal jobs. PavePro was invented to replace diesel fuel and comply with EPA standards.

100% Biodegradability

Being 100% biodegradable means breaking down completely into natural materials (water, carbon dioxide, biomass – materials that will not harm the environment) in a reasonable amount of time. PavePro’s 5-day biodegradability is 54%, while citrus’ is 3% and diesel’s is 0%. Biodegradability is extremely important in protecting our water sources and the environment as a whole.

Don’t settle for anything less than the best, experience the next level of environmental responsibility and add value to your company with PavePro!
